Puela Lunaris was
born Maria del Pilar Sanchez Herrera in a millenary village in
Southwestern Spain that has been a crossroad of cultures and
civilizations since prehistory.
Even though Puela Lunaris grew
up in the ruins of a Moorish castle, immersed in the traditional
Flamenco culture, she realized her passion for the art, much
later in life, while working as an entertainment producer for
Univision in Miami. She thoughtfully gave up a successful career
in commercial TV, to become a full time dancer. Soon after that,
she decided to use her professional expertise as a producer in
the service of dance and cultural diversity.
In 1994, she
created the Dances
of the World Society as a network for individuals
and organizations to Rescue World Dances in Danger
of Extinction by documenting them audio-visually in their natural
environment.
