¡Zambomba!
A Documentary Celebrating Flamenco Rhythms, Joy & Belonging
Join us in preserving this living ritual.
Be part of a story that spans generations.
Why This Documentary? Why Now?
🌟 ¡Zambomba! A Flamenco Living Ritual is a documentary series rooted in over 20 years of field research, capturing the evolution of this beloved tradition in Jerez (Spain) and beyond.
🌟 This soulful celebration brings people together around bonfires, under the stars, to sing, dance, and connect—a joyful release from the stresses of daily life.
🌟 Yet this endearing tradition is at risk, as fewer people gather in the old ways. That’s why I am producing this documentary now — to share its vitality, preserve its essence, and pass it on to future generations.

What We Need
We’re raising funds to complete the pilot episode of this series, which not only explores Zambomba as the origin of Flamenco Christmas but also traces its roots to the origins of Christmas itself.
This pilot delves into how this soulful tradition began, its near disappearance, its revival, and the challenges it now faces. It also highlights how Flamenco Christmas is expanding globally, inspiring artists everywhere to create new and fascinating repertoire from this beloved tradition.
Your contributions will help cover critical costs, such as:
- Equipment:Â Obtaining the necessary equipment to film the celebrations in their full glory.
- Editing & Audio Post-Production:Â Ensuring the highest possible quality sound and visuals to capture the heart and soul of this tradition.
- Bilingual Subtitles:Â Making the documentary accessible to Spanish and English audiences worldwide.
- Digitalization of older video footage:Â these are precious ethnographic jewels that were recorded 20 years ago in analog video format and now need to be digitized.
I hope you are excited to become a part of this formidable project because the Zambomba documentary series is a legacy that will benefit generations to come, even long after we are gone from the face of the Earth.
Risks & Challenges
While I am passionate about sharing the Zambomba Flamenco Christmas tradition, there are some challenges I may face:
- Weather & Scheduling: Filming around the holiday season in Jerez means unpredictable weather and coordination with local celebrations. If delays occur, they could impact our filming schedule.
- Budget Constraints:Â While I am committed to delivering a high-quality documentary, certain aspects of the production, like music/images licensing or having to travel, may stretch our budget.
How We’ll Overcome These Challenges:
I have planned for possible delays in scheduling and have backup dates in place for filming to ensure we capture the best moments of the Zambomba celebration to share with you.
I’ve been documenting the Zambomba tradition since 2004, and I have developed strong relationships with local flamenco artists and communities in Jerez, where I live now for a good portion of the year. This local knowledge and experience will help me navigate any unexpected obstacles.
If we don’t reach our entire goal, rest assured that any funds raised will go toward making this project happen. While some aspects may be scaled back, the project will get done! Your support will make a difference in preserving and sharing this tradition, regardless of the total amount raised.
